Modern Fuel Dyes

Have you ever bought fuel in blue, for example? Or bright orange? And if you saw such fuel, would you buy it, or would you go to another gas station? To this day, the bright, beautiful colors of fuel are still shocking and confusing to people. What is something added to fuel and how do its physical properties change? Let’s look into it.

What kind of fuel dyes are available?

Nowadays, there are plenty of fuel dyes to choose from. They come in liquid and powder form. And the powder ones are much more difficult to use, although they are cheap. However, today they are practically not used anymore. Liquid dyes – solvents – are very popular. They are quickly distributed throughout the entire fuel volume and are visible at very low concentrations.

The dye pigment can be any color: blue, red, yellow, green, orange, etc. And if you mix the dyes in the right proportions, you can get a deeper fuel color or a new shade.

Dyes are also differentiated by manufacturer, as well as by fuel labeling. They come in:

Today harmless dyes are used, so they are not hazardous to nature or humans.

Why do we need fuel dyes at all?

In fact, everything is quite simple. The color helps to distinguish a petroleum product visually, without laboratory analysis. For example, in the Soviet Union leaded gasoline was used, but it posed an increased danger. Therefore, the color red can be used to highlight fuel that requires additional safety measures.

Fuel producers can use color to distinguish between different grades and classes of fuel. Or, for example, to give their products a specific brand color.

As you see, the paint does not carry any fuel hazard, is not dangerous to others, and does not change the physical and chemical properties of the fuel. It most often acts as a marker to classify different grades and classes.
